The Production of Built Environment

Title : What do you think of the production of the built environment

All of us live in the built environment, but not all the human beings know how and why these built environments have been built or created.

Example of Built Environment 1 : New York City

Example of Built Environment 2 : The Luxembourg City

Before we start the discussion about the production of the built environment, we first have to distinguish the difference between the word “production” and “reproduction”. According to the Oxford dictionary, “production” means “the art of making or producing something”, whereas the word “reproduction” means “the act of showing or producing again” or “copy or imitate”.

This means that, the production of the built environment is the making or producing of the build environment. The most important component in the built environment is people with certain ideas.

But, what is "built environment" ?

According to Answers.com, the built environment (as distinct from the natural environment) is now the most significant environment for humans, especially in the developed world. The built environment includes both the buildings in which people spend their time (home, school, workplace, recreational facilities, shops and malls, etc.) and the broader built environment of human settlements (villages, towns, suburbs, and cities). It is not only a physical environment, it is also a social environment, where people gather and relate to one another. The design, construction, and operation of built environments has enormous implications for human health.

The overview of a Built Environment

There are a lot of factors to make mankind to build up the environment. One of the reasons is to make our life more comfortable. Try to imagine, if you live in the jungle, and there is no electricity, no water, no food, no house, etc…are you feel comfortable? Unless some people who are used to this kind of life, otherwise non of us will feel cosy in the jungle.

The second fac
tor is to improve the place. Normally in a place which are less developed, people there are overall poorer than those in the cities, and the living standard and living conditions there is low and bad. To make those places more developed, some people, such as government, will produce a built environment there.

There are few basic elements to produce a built environment. One of the elements is ‘hasil’, which means product or result. The product is the result obtain after a construction. Example of the products are Petronas Twin Tower, KL Tower, Kuala Lumpur International Airport and others.

The product after the construction : KL Tower ( Above ), Petronas Twin Tower ( Below )

The second element is the action to create a built environment. When a person have an idea to create a built environment, he will take several actions to fulfill his idea. He will start to plan what should he do and find the people who is related to his plan to help him to complete his idea. Nothing can be done without taking a first step and start an action.

The third element is the intention to produce a built environment. Without intention, the built environment cannot be created. For an example, the government have an intense to make Kuala Lumpur become the most developed area, therefore they will work hard to grow the city.

The fourth element is actor. Without mankind, nothing can be done, even the machines which use to build houses and other buildings, also need mankind to operate it. The people who have direct relate to the production of the built environment is architect, quantity surveyor, city planner, civil engineer, contractor and interior designer.

The fifth element is the rules and regulations. No matter the rules are come from a belief or what, people in a built environment should know what to do and what cannot be done. If all the people are not following the laws, then the built environment will soon 'collapse'.

The last element is the site. Without a site, where can the built environment been placed on? Besides, we have to find a strategy site to build the buildings. If we find the wrong site to build it, the buildings will collapse and cause the death of many people.

However, there are lots of side effects of the production of the built environment. The most serious side effect is the pollution. The built environment produce lots of pollution to environment, such as ocean pollution, air pollution, sound pollution and others. This will make the earth become more and more dirty and hard to live in.

Another side effect is the built environment will cause greenhouse effect to the earth. When we produce a built environment, we will cut down a lot of trees. Therefore, there are lesser trees to absorb the carbon dioxide which may cause the temperature of the earth become higher. This will cause the greenhouse effect which after that will make the iceberg at Antarctic and Arctic melt. The doomsday will come faster.

The iceberg at Antarctic and Arctic melted because of the greenhouse effect.

Therefore, all of us should beware these things from happen and protect our earth. We cannot just produce the built environment without protect it from being polluted.
